Project: Building 52

Building 52 is a historic structure located at Fort Leavenworth, KS, in the middle of the Landmark Historic District. The building is a high priority, high visibility structure for both the installation as well as the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office.

Treanor Architects serves as the preservation consultant to Gossen Livingston and was contacted for tower restoration after large pieces of masonry fell from the Building 52 tower in spring 2008. The tower, constructed c. 1907, is part of a National Landmark Historic District at Fort Leavenworth. Treanor was contracted to perform a close up, aerial inspection of the tower from the copper dome down to the level of adjacent rooflines. The study documented existing conditions of the tower and identified causes of deterioration. Short-term stabilization measures to be undertaken in the fall of 2008 were developed with the structural consultant. Long-term recommendations for permanent, appropriate repairs to this landmark of the Leavenworth skyline also were formulated.

Education City Student Housing Completed

Project: Education City Student Housing

With students, staff and faculty from more than two-dozen countries and branch campuses of six world-class universities (Virginia Commonwealth, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Cornell, Texas A&M and Northwestern), Education City in Doha, Qatar, is an educational experiment unlike any other in the world. In a competition meant to set a new standard worldwide for excellence in student housing quality, Education City challenged five student housing architects to design the ideal housing for Education City’s students.

In September 2007, a committee selected Treanor Architect’s design, which creates an environment where students could thrive personally, socially, spiritually and academically in a community that encourages unity and connection. Rooted in ACUHO-I 21st Century Project design principles, the new housing considers Education City’s unique culture and makes use of cutting-edge innovations in security, technology and sustainability. The 759,000 square foot project is designed to achieve platinum LEED certification with zero waste, creating a self-sufficient community. All 12 buildings are registered with the USGBC.

This project is featured in May + June 2008 issue of Talking Stick and won the People's Choice Award for ACUHO-I's 21st Century Project Product Showcase in February 2008.

Washington & Jefferson Chestnut Street Housing Finished

The 2003 Washington & Jefferson housing master plan indicated a need for an additional 740 beds. A two-phase building plan included apartments style living for upper class students and theme housing to replace on-campus fraternity and sorority units. The theme housing features 10 building units designed to accommodate 260 beds. The colonial revival style architecture was varied from unit to unit to reflect a unique home for each group. Floor plans were varied slightly in addition to material selections and design for the front porches; various brick color and exterior trim on the architectural elements. Great care was taken to present compatible designs that would be easily maintained while offering individuality to the occupants.

The housing complex is comprised of a total of 10 buildings; 7 units are freestanding buildings, and 3 units form the last building, sharing only common walls, no shared amenities. Each of the 10 units offers 26 beds in a mix of traditional designed double and single occupancy rooms. There are community baths dispersed throughout the buildings. A parlor room (which serve as chapter rooms when Greek organizations are the occupants), study room and efficiency kitchens occupy the common space on the first floor.
