Architectural
Originally constructed in 1965, the twin seven-story residence halls (Hudson & Gillett) and the Rollins Commons building are undergoing full-scale renovations. The goal for the design is to create attractive, comfortable housing that welcomes students into a vibrant social environment focused on community building and good sustainable practices. The design will incorporate art and the heritage of the university, and will provide a variety of learning environments.
The $26 million, 224,500 square foot renovation will use glass to freshen up the look of the existing building, bringing in an abundance of natural light to modernize the look without making major building changes. A new classroom space will generate revenue for housing and help to create a living-learning environment for the students. The current cold institutional entrances will be replaced with one unifying warm modern entrance with access to the public dining facility and classroom space. This new grand, central foyer creates a more inviting secure environment for residents.
