Project: Education City Student Housing

With students, staff and faculty from more than two-dozen countries and branch campuses of six world-class universities (Virginia Commonwealth, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Cornell, Texas A&M and Northwestern), Education City in Doha, Qatar, is an educational experiment unlike any other in the world. In a competition meant to set a new standard worldwide for excellence in student housing quality, Education City challenged five student housing architects to design the ideal housing for Education City’s students.

In September 2007, a committee selected Treanor Architect’s design, which creates an environment where students could thrive personally, socially, spiritually and academically in a community that encourages unity and connection. Rooted in ACUHO-I 21st Century Project design principles, the new housing considers Education City’s unique culture and makes use of cutting-edge innovations in security, technology and sustainability. The 759,000 square foot project is designed to achieve platinum LEED certification with zero waste, creating a self-sufficient community. All 12 buildings are registered with the USGBC.

This project is featured in May + June 2008 issue of Talking Stick and won the People's Choice Award for ACUHO-I's 21st Century Project Product Showcase in February 2008.
