Douglas County Jail

Story

The design of this 196-bed, 107,000 square foot facility was based on a direct supervision pod concept, developed to allow the largest number of inmates to be directly supervised with the fewest staff possible. A visitation system was designed to allow visitors access the non-contact visitation areas of the pods without need for an officer escort. Medical observation cells and a courtroom were utilized to limit expensive inmate transportation costs and provide the most secure environment for inmate services. Educational and group spaces are situated on the secure corridor to allow inmates to access these services unescorted. Work release inmates are housed in a ground-level pod eliminating the need for those inmates to enter the secure facility, thus reducing the possibilities of contraband in the secure area.

in 2006, Treanor assisted with a 1,024 square foot exterior work release recreation yard addition. The secured perimeter is made up of a series of 19-foot pre-cast concrete walls that were designed to match the existing finish of the jail. A security grill completes the roof of the recreation yard. Two openings were cut into the existing pre-cast walls to allow access to the new exterior space. Security hollow metal frames with 3/4" security glazing finish the newly cut openings. A new layout was generated for bunk locations.

Programming also has been initiated for an addition to accommodate the new "re-entry" program. A day center will provide space to house administrative programs such as probation officers, community health, substance abuse counseling, employment assistance, etc. Minimum security housing will contain work release and transitional housing for male and females.
