Lyon County Courthouse

Emporia, Kansas

Architectural

Story

The old Lyon County Courthouse, located on the main street, was built in the early 1950s replacing a grand turn-of-the-century courthouse. The new courthouse combines the character of the original courthouse with large, arched openings predominant on this downtown street. The contemporary curve at the entrance gives light and an inviting approach from multiple directions.

The new 96,000-square foot courthouse includes four courtrooms and associated judicial spaces for the fifth district court. The owner enthusiastically embraced state-of-the-art technology to create secure courtrooms that are the most technologically advanced in the Midwest. In an effort to provide centralized services for county residents, a variety of county functions are located in the building. The vacated courthouse will be updated and used for other county functions.
