Union Station Subway :: Platform and Concourse Improvements

Toronto, ON

structural-engineering

Story

Union Station, the main hub station where the Yonge subway line, University subway line, Go Train, and the CN trains connect, is under renovation to add a second pedestrian platform due to large volume of pedestrian traffic during rush hour.  To accommodate this, additional excavation was needed on top and adjacent to the existing TTC tunnel.  Stephenson involvement is to provide shoring support for all the excavations, provide temporary support for all the utilities exposed and provide temporary supports to the TTC tunnel due to unbalanced soil loads during construction.  The excavation support provided support for nearby buildings such as the Dominion Building and the moat wall structure which is part of the union station structure built in the 1910’s.

Stephenson Engineering provided a unique solution for the removal and jacking of the TTC tunnel in order to remove the south wall of the tunnel to connect to the new pedestrian platform.
