Location. Location. Location. There is no phrase that is more appropriate to describe the renovation of the University of Connecticut Health Center, Center for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry. The project site is located on the main floor of the hospital in an extremely busy thoroughfare and sandwiched below by a clinical pathology laboratory, an autopsy facility and the morgue. Above the site are additional dental clinics and next door lies the sleep clinic. These neighbors alone would provide enough logistical obstacles to make any project a challenge. The renovation of the Center for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry began with the complete demolition of existing space. Our team worked on weekends to shutdown systems to accept new waste lines, water lines, medical gas lines and fire protection. We cored drilled approximately 50 holes in the ceilings and floor to accommodate the new lines and provide drains for equipment and special furnishing. Then we began the reconstruction, new floors, walls, ceilings, cabinetry, and electrical, mechanical and dental specialties. From start to finish, our team spent nine weekends and approximately 800 hours of overtime on this project. The new Center for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry is not just another beautiful facility. It contains eight state-of-the-art treatment rooms and the newest in sophisticated equipment including a cone-beam tomography unit. The Center is staffed with nationally recognized experts in the field of dental reconstruction and dental implants. This new facility provides the space and technology to enable faculty and students to continue to maintain this level of excellence. Partnered with the New England Musculoskeletal Institute, the Center is also the leader in innovative research.
