Thornapple River Redux

Reconceptualizing for a 21st Century Family

Story

We sought to transform an older home into a modern space better suiting its new occupants, and our effort deserves recognition for achieving this goal on many levels. The floor plan was dramatically opened – walls removed and ceilings vaulted – to enhance a sense of shared space while preserving freedom and encouraging movement. Abundant rear windows and a patio were added to draw attention to the tranquil river below, blending inside and outside spaces. A show-stopping kitchen, featuring a television that disappears into a banquette when not in use, caters to the owners’ shared love for cooking. And when teenage sons leave the home, the main level can be zoned off to carry the owners comfortably and efficiently into their retirement years.
