Commercial Contracting Corporation (CCC) was hired to provide general contractor services to construct a new 1-million-gallon Clearwell for the City of Alpena’s water production plant. The project consists of the construction of the new clearwell, the demolition of the existing clearwell, installation of new water service lines to and from the facility, and miscellaneous grading and landscape work. CCC is self-performing all concrete, structural steel, and precast concrete work on the project. In total, our teams are self-performing 50% of the work, which equates to roughly $5 million of the total contract value. The new tank was constructed in bedrock which posed a particular challenge since the team was very limited on the means of removing the bedrock. The existing facility is 100 years old, and there were concerns that excessive vibration would cause damages to the surrounding buildings. The team was able to complete the bedrock excavation and removal without causing any disturbance to the existing plant.
