Milliken Nature Center at Arch Rock

Crafting Excellence Amidst Natural Beauty and Logistical Challenges on Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island, MI

Story

Constructed by Spence Brothers, the Milliken Nature Center is a 1,919-square-foot facility that enhances the visitor experience at Mackinac Island’s iconic Arch Rock. Building on the island posed significant challenges, as no vehicles are allowed, requiring materials and equipment to be transported by ferry and horse-drawn carriages. Despite the logistical complexities of working in a protected state park and navigating steep terrain, Spence Brothers delivered the project on time. Having performed award-winning work at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the team leveraged their experience to meet the highest standards of craftsmanship, sustainability, and environmental preservation. The center, named after Governor William Milliken, now serves over 500,000 annual visitors, providing educational exhibits on the island’s unique geology and supporting Northern Michigan’s vital tourism industry.
