Fish Shop, a new culinary destination in Washington, DC, is a proud addition to ArtFarm, a UK-based hospitality and development company. This marks ArtFarm’s first expansion into the U.S. after the successful opening of Manuela in NYC. Originating from Ballater, Scotland, Fish Shop brings its signature dedication to craftsmanship, sustainable design, and exceptional dining to the nation's capital. The private dining room of Fish Shop is a stunning example of ArtFarm's commitment to thoughtful, artisanal design. The room features a distinctive clay plaster finish, imported from the UK. This finely ground, 5mm-layer plaster material is a first for the subcontractor, adding a unique texture and depth to the space. To further enhance the natural aesthetic, the owner personally contributed muscle shells, which were permanently embedded into the plaster, creating an organic, textural effect that beautifully echoes the maritime theme of the restaurant. An intricate shell stamp design, woven throughout the space, complements these features and brings a sense of continuity and detail. The project's execution was a remarkable feat of communication and collaboration. With the architect and construction manager located in New York, the design team stationed in London, and ownership based in the UK, strong communication was paramount. The active engagement of both the ownership and design teams throughout the interior design process ensured that every detail of the space was carefully curated. The project also embraced sustainability and resourcefulness by sourcing reclaimed wood, shells for light fixtures, and parts of wrecked ships, contributing to the restaurant's unique, rustic charm. Given the international scope of the project, special attention was given to materials with long lead times, often sourced directly from the UK, reflecting the authenticity and heritage that define Fish Shop's brand. Fish Shop in Washington, DC, is not just a restaurant; it is an immersive experience that blends artisanal craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and sustainable practices. It serves as a testament to ArtFarm’s dedication to creating spaces that feel both timeless and uniquely connected to their origins.
