The Old Miner Elementary School Restoration and Renovation Project

Washington DC , DC

Story

Historic Preservation Narrative : The modernization of the existing school building represents a comprehensive approach to improving both functionality and sustainability. As the general contractor, we performed extensive masonry restoration, preserving the building’s historic character while addressing structural integrity issues. Our team also completed crucial concrete work to establish proper foundations for the new additions and ensure ADA compliance throughout the facility. The interior renovations will enhance accessibility through the addition of an elevator, ensuring all students and staff can navigate the building with ease. The new vestibule will create a secure, welcoming entrance point while improving energy efficiency by reducing air exchange between indoor and outdoor environments. The exterior elements of the project further enhance the school’s usability and appeal. A covered walkway will provide students and staff protection from inclement weather while moving between buildings or during outdoor activities. Our carpentry and drywall teams were instrumental in constructing these features, employing skilled craftsmanship to create durable, aesthetically pleasing structures that complement the existing architecture. The landscaping improvements will not only beautify the campus but also incorporate native plants and sustainable design principles that reduce water usage and maintenance requirements. The playground renovation will offer updated, safe recreational spaces that promote physical activity and social development among students. The commitment to achieving LEED Gold certification demonstrates the project’s strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. This prestigious certification requires substantial energy efficiency measures, responsible material selection, water conservation strategies, and indoor environmental quality considerations. Our carpentry and drywall work was executed with sustainable materials and practices, contributing significantly to the LEED certification goals. By meeting these rigorous standards, the school will significantly reduce its environmental footprint and operating costs while creating healthier learning spaces for students. Additionally, the LEED-certified building itself becomes an educational tool, offering students real-world examples of sustainable design and environmental stewardship.
