The Cardinal’s Nest project involved tripling the size of an original summer kitchen, located approximately one block from the famed, three-Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington. What was once a modest, 500-square-foot, one-story structure has been expanded into a stunning guest residence, meticulously designed to honor the historical character of the surrounding properties while masterfully adding a second floor and two new wings. Upon entering the charming cottage, guests are greeted by a grand curved staircase that adds elegance and fluidity to the space, beautifully inviting guests to the newly constructed second floor. To the left of the foyer resides the vestiges of the original building which has been transformed into a vaulted-ceiling living area, anchored by the original dramatic stone fireplace preserved from the original structure. Beyond the living area, the butler’s kitchen showcases soft pale green cabinetry, beautifully paired with a white marble countertop and backsplash. Complete with a private staff entrance, a separate stone walkway was added to discreetly service guests. To the right of the foyer, a lower-level bedroom radiates warmth with its vibrant yellow walls and airy vaulted ceiling, while the second-level bedroom, painted in a rich, calming green, offers a cozy retreat with classic shutters and a charming window bench—perfect for taking in the picturesque views of Washington, VA. Both bedrooms have adjoining expansive bathrooms complete with separate showers, a soaking tub, and period accessories. To ensure the residence maintained its historical integrity, the exterior framing was carefully preserved to align with local historical requirements. One of the greatest challenges was adhering to strict preservation guidelines, which mandated the use of authentic materials. Instead of modern building alternatives, the team utilized real wood, ensuring the property’s authenticity. Every trim and material profile was custom fabricated to match existing elements to be historically appropriate. New windows and custom wood panels were installed throughout the home, blending modern craftsmanship with the charm of the original design. The bathrooms were designed as spa-like retreats, featuring luxurious finishes such as full-height glass wall panels and soaking tubs. Outside, a private garden and cedar hot tub offer an additional layer of relaxation. From its humble beginnings as a 500-square-foot, one-room cottage, the Cardinal’s Nest has been meticulously restored and expanded into a timeless blend of historical preservation and modern luxury. Despite the challenges of using traditional materials and custom profiles, the result is a seamless, elegant retreat that remains a harmonious part of Washington, VA’s historic landscape.
