Kenmoor Middle School

Greater Landover, MD

Story

OVERVIEW As a Design-Assist partner, Shapiro & Duncan helped build Kenmoor Middle School, one of four cutting-edge “prototype” middle schools for PGCPS. Our team was involved very early in the design phase providing cost and constructability feedback and all the way to project completion. Shapiro & Duncan played a pivotal role by installing all the plumbing and HVAC systems, showcasing our expertise in creating state-of-the-art learning environments. Installation of top-of-the-line equipment included 8 rooftop units featuring chilled water and hot water coils, packaged rooftop unit, kitchen makeup air unit, 17 supply and exhaust fans, and 120 variable air volume terminal units. CHALLENGES The hanger installation process was a huge challenge. Due to the unique purlin and lathe-style roof system, hanging our piping systems from this roof structure required us to navigate multiple steps and complexities to ensure a successful installation. As a result, our typical two-step hanger process would not work, and hangers had to be installed in multiple steps to accommodate the roofing system design. Coordinating underground site utilities is always a challenge but at Kenmoor it was a notable feat to coordinate the successful installation of the grease interceptor, graded sanitary piping, chilled-water piping, and other site utilities all within a very small footprint between the school and retaining wall system. This required our utmost attention during 3D modeling. SOLUTIONS To address challenges posed by the unique purlin and lathe-style roof system, our team developed a comprehensive hanger solution. We conducted an analysis of the roof structure to understand its load-bearing capacities and attachment points. This allowed us to determine the most suitable locations for hanging our piping systems while ensuring structural integrity. We collaborated with structural engineers and architects to devise customized hanger solutions to integrate with the roof system. This involved designing specialized brackets and supports to securely suspend the pipes in their designated positions. This guaranteed a smooth and efficient installation. Coordination played a pivotal role when figuring out the limited space for all the critical components behind Kenmoor. Our Virtual Design team coordinated closely with other trades and synchronized the installation of various utilities. This collaborative approach facilitated efficient spatial planning and minimized conflicts or disruptions during the installation phase. Through meticulous planning, we successfully worked through the challenge of limited space. RESULTS Kenmoor MS is designed to accommodate an occupancy of 1,200 students and staff. The academic core of the building spans two stories, providing ample space for classrooms and educational facilities. The school features a two-story section housing the gymnasium, food services, and common areas like administrative spaces, learning star, STEM lab, and dance and choral areas. With sustainability at the forefront, Kenmoor MS is working towards achieving a minimum LEED Silver Certification.
