Death & Co

Washington, DC

Story

Death & Co, a legendary New York City cocktail bar and one of the most lauded of its type in the United States, opened its first D.C. location in the summer of 2023 after its expansion in Denver and Los Angeles. The cocktail bar replaced the former Columbia Room space in Blagden Alley with a complete redesign/makeover. Adding to its allure, the exterior of the cocktail bar is inconspicuous with just a small sign reading “Death & Co Est. 2006” to the left of a solid black door. Once inside, the legacy of the Columbia Room lives on with the former bar’s mosaic adorning the accent wall, yet the space itself underwent a significant transformation. In keeping with its discreet and slightly dark vibe (hence, the name) the bar is designed with rich textures and darker tones to evoke a sense of privacy. During the complex renovation, walls were removed between the former occupant’s private spaces to create one open lounge with stunning lighting and rich millwork, which required relocation mechanical equipment. One of the greatest challenges was removing a large portion of the raised floor in the space. While still maintaining ADA access with a ramp at the main entrance, the bar is built down into two separate levels. Structural reinforcements were made to allow for this theater-style-esque design walking down to the bar as center stage. However, all this work required meticulous coordination and scheduling in order to not disrupt the operations of the one Michelin-starred restaurant/bar, The Dabney, directly below the space; especially with demolition and plumbing penetrations. Preserving and relocating the former Columbia Room’s mural necessitated a meticulous week-long process dedicated to its careful support and relocation. At the heart of the redesigned space lies a striking pearlescent white marble bar, sunken into the center of the room, serving as the focal point of the interior. The bar boasts inviting orange stools for guests to settle into. Surrounding this focal point, elegant marble tables and luxurious deep blue booths create a stunning contrast against the lively hue of the bar stools. Above, a softly illuminated wooden slat ceiling creates a warm glow, completing the inviting ambiance. Rich velvet booths, adorned in warm wood and opulent shades of green evoke a feeling of luxury. A semi-private booth for eight creates a more intimate space complete with heavy, light-blocking curtains for a greater sense of intimacy. In contrast to the darker and moody feel of the interior, the outside deck brings a bright and airy patio bar. In keeping an organic design with natural elements, the floor is constructed with wooden planks, while brick adorns the walls, complemented by rows of potted and hanging plants that create a tropical ambiance. The bar itself is highlighted with vibrant red-orange tiles, echoing the hues of the bar stools. Orange banquettes, complemented by white oversized chairs and circular marble tables, invite guests to unwind and savor their cocktails al fresco.
