Lindsay Volvo

Story

Lindsay Volvo is a brand-new, state-of-the-art dealership, occupying 94,000 square feet in the city of Alexandria, Virginia. The scope of work included construction of a showroom, well-equipped offices, and service centers, and associate sitework with two below-ground stories dedicated to inventory and parking. The Lindsay Volvo project stands out as a testament to perseverance and innovation, making it a deserving candidate for an Award of Excellence despite facing numerous challenges and unforeseen conditions. From the outset, the project encountered environmental concerns as the old building on the site had asbestos, requiring an extensive and careful removal process. Additionally, the discovery of an even older building on the site, an old movie theatre, added complexity to the demolition phase, highlighting the need to navigate unforeseen obstacles. Mitigating contaminated soils was another hurdle that stretched the schedule and increased costs. This, coupled with the project's location in a congested area with a busy street, existing shopping center, and residential buildings nearby, added pressure and logistical challenges. Early awards for sitework, sheeting & shoring, concrete and structural steel helped mitigate supply chain concerns. The two-stories below grade meant weather conditions had a substantial impact, requiring careful planning and the use of cranes to lift equipment in and out. One notable challenge was the noise and vibration ordinance, which necessitated a strategic approach to sheeting and shoring. The project team could not simply pound on the steel; instead, they had to drill first, showcasing adaptability and compliance with local regulations. Additionally, the project involved the removal and relocation of a bike share and bus stop that were near the building. These elements had to be brought back after the project was completed, highlighting the project's commitment to community integration and thoughtful urban planning. Additionally, managing utilities such as water, sewer, and power, including restructuring the power grid from overhead to underground, required close collaboration with subcontractors and coordination with nearby developments. Despite challenges, the Lindsay Volvo project persevered, despite delays in finishing the bio ponds until power and light poles were removed. The Lindsay Volvo project's ability to overcome adversity, adapt to changing conditions, and deliver a high-quality outcome makes it a standout contender for an Award of Excellence in recognition of its resilience, innovation, and dedication to quality construction.
