The project is a relocation of Volkswagen’s North American HQ into 7 floors of a newly constructed trophy building at 1950 Opportunity Way in Reston Town Center totaling 168,000 SF of new office and meeting space. Each floor showcases a different design suited to the individual business groups within VW, such as Audi and Bentley. The project features terrazzo, tile, and wood flooring integrated with 4,000 LF of demountable partitions, extensive high-end millwork package, and three new interconnecting feature stairs. This new space hosts a feature lighting package, thirteen different specialty ceilings and new metal cladding at all elevators across nine elevator lobbies, and DAVIS also completed an elegant feature exhibit space on the first floor that will showcase new automobiles and automotive technology. Execution was crucial, and the DAVIS team was able to adjust highly technical and difficult situations. We installed three new interconnecting stairs, including a curved stair that features curved glass and shoe as well as thick steel plates that serve as its interior guardrail—this stair serves as the centerpiece of the project’s principal showcase space on the 20th floor. Guardrail components were custom machined, and the stair was welded in place in six pieces, requiring detailed planning. Additionally, millwork was incorporated at joint alignments, requiring critical review of shop drawings and field coordination. The elevator lobbies are impressive, boasting multiple colors of terrazzo with varying aggregate sizes poured adjacent to one another, as well as all new metal cladding. This required critical coordination with adjacent materials including wall covering, glass, millwork, and light fixtures. Over 21,000-SF of terrazzo is poured throughout the spaces and integrates with the wood floor, tile floor, and carpeting. Extensive leveling was required to build up the terrazzo to the proper level and to flatten the areas where it integrates with other materials.
