Confidential Client

Story

While the scope of work for a new tenant improvement project of 9,000 sf of office space for a confidential client appeared to be a relatively standard project on paper, the end result would be far from the norm. The design of this SCIF buildout in the office suite of an existing 5-story building would showcase the convergence of a unique motif with the paramount need for utmost security. A marriage between interior design creativity and SCIF projects is unique, and this project would demonstrate how successful this union could be. On the construction side, the project called for all new construction, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems with the stringent requirements of a SCIF – meticulously tailored to safeguard sensitive information. One of the major design aspects of importance to the client was to construct secure walls and barriers with radiant foil. The use of radiant foil on the walls, floors and deck of the sensitive spaces enhances security by reducing electromagnetic interference and providing thermal insulation. Dialectric breaks were used for all plumbing and electrical wall penetrations and wave guides were installed at every ductwork penetration. This also included the use of STC 50 doors and frames that were also manufactured with a lining of RF foil to create a six-sided shielded box. There were other security design elements used during construction including the use of access control systems, surveillance, secure locks, and soundproofing. In addition to the coordination of security design considerations for a SCIF, we also integrated custom and complex finishes to incorporate the client’s unique theming vision into the space. The overall interior design theme called into play the vibrant tapestry of New Orleans, brimming with culture, color and history. The mystic and eclectic charm of the “Big Easy” was woven throughout the space in dramatic and unexpected fashion. Key elements of this design, built upon a vibrant pastel color palette, included full wall murals of Bourbon Street, a Garden on the Wall accent behind the Cambria stone reception desk, unique brightly colored light fixtures with sound-reducing baffles, crocodile leather wall covering, jazz-themed instruments mounted at accent walls, sliding glass markerboards in conference room areas, and custom millwork with linear actuators to conceal them behind each other. The completed project presented a truly dramatic environment, combining uncompromising SCIF building requirements with an interior design that makes a lasting impression.
