George Washington Carver Center (GWCC) Modernization

Beltsville, Maryland

Story

This project was initiated by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of Operation for the installation of water lines for domestic water supply of GWCC complex making it able to receive water from the Prince George County’s Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and restoration of physical piping connection from the WSSC water source. Stocks General Contractors (Stocks GC) was a subcontractor for the project, and Grunley Construction Company was the prime contractor.  Project scope included excavation of trenches and site preparation for water line installation including temporary shoring, bracing, and safely hauling excavated materials away from site for safe disposal. Installation of 1200 lf 8” water lines including valves, fittings, appurtenances, and hydrant flow testing. Scope also included surface restoration such as asphalt and concrete, permanent seeding, and topsoil. The project presented unique challenges, including underground utility conflicts, tighter deadlines, and complex connections. Protecting underground utilities was a main challenge, which required proper utility markings, rigorous test pitting, and hand digging in many instances. Minimizing water service interruptions in the building was another challenge for the construction team which needed proper planning and sequencing different stages. Stocks crews demonstrated excellent dedication to safety and quality and completed the project within the specified schedule and within budget to the satisfaction of the client.  Stocks GC was able to exceed our client’s expectations by completing this project on schedule, on budget and with zero lost time incidents.
