Campus Master Plan
Bethesda, MD
The Landon School Campus Master Plan was a complex multi-phase project focused on optimizing the layout of the School's campus to create an academic quadrangle with new, renovated, and relocated buildings. A key emphasis was also placed on redesigning site circulation to separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic, thereby improving the "flow" of the campus while mitigating existing safety concerns and creating a pedestrian-centric hub at the heart of the campus. Construction commenced with Phase 0. The scope of work for this phase included site work and general improvements to the School's entrance, including a new roadway, security booth, gate, and fence. Phase 1A of the project involved relocating the historic Andrews House, a 100-year-old 14,000 SF building, to allow for the construction of the new Boehly Upper School. Boehly Upper School began construction in Phase 1B and houses a dedicated STEM center, which includes state-of-the-art science and engineering labs. The building also features a central skylight common area suited for lectures and presentations and serves as a social gathering space. The existing Upper School building was renovated and modernized with updated technology and classroom configurations before becoming the new home for Landon's Middle School. During Phase 1C, the existing Middle School building was renovated to accommodate the Lower School and features a new mechanical system and all new windows and storefronts for improved energy efficiency and increased comfortability. The finished spaces feature larger classrooms, more functional academic spaces, and smaller collaborative spaces that students use to work on projects outside the classroom. Every aspect of the project's design was thoughtfully planned to help Landon evolve without disrupting its legacy and aesthetic. Trees on the property earmarked for removal were repurposed, with their wood milled to craft furniture for the School. Notably, the sitting steps in the Commons Area of Boehly Upper School and the majority of desks and chairs within the premises are fashioned from these salvaged trees, contributing to a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to furnishing the campus. The resulting product of all these improvements elevates the Landon experience, fulfilling the School's original vision and preparing for future needs.
