Bard High School Early College

Washington, District of Columbia

Story

Bard High School Early College stands out in the DGS school portfolio. LEED Platinum pending and Net Zero Energy ready were archived and certified through a rigorous commissioning process, and the building envelope tested to the highest achievable levels. Bard High School Early College is not just a place of learning, but also a model of sustainability. It features a solar panel-ready roof, geothermal wells, and numerous other sustainable elements. The sitework, including the installation of a hardscape plaza, sidewalks, parking with EV chargers, a basketball court, bioretention structures, and an artificial turf playing field surrounded by a running track, is a reflection of our shared responsibility towards the environment. Throughout the early stages of design, we worked closely with the architectural, engineering, structural, and civil team members to coordinate the conceptual plan for the project, identifying key areas requiring design assistance and introducing additional consultants, subcontractors, and manufacturers to provide feedback at the conceptual level. They assisted with building envelope coordination, geothermal well requirements, structural systems, façade performance, constructability, and glazing system compatibility related to curtain wall systems and skylight systems. Introducing new experts allowed for a collaborative environment between the design-build team. MCN implemented several early release packages, including site demolition, that allowed construction activities to commence, including critical, time-sensitive packages like hazardous materials abatement. This early release allowed geotechnical investigations to begin, providing a more accurate assessment of the entire project site and the ability to release long lead items to begin the submittal and shop drawing process. This project also involved extensive subcontractor coordination from preconstruction through closeout. Utilizing the existing concrete building structure required extensive coordination with multiple trades. This ensured the new metal panel façade would have a seamless finish design. Bard High School was constructed in an active community and involved an intricate understanding of the complex landscape of stakeholders in the District. The former elementary school was a significant piece of the community, with neighbors typically using the property as a recreation center. Due to these reasons, the project required significant community engagement. The design-build team created a design that complements the architecture of the neighborhood and ensured sought-after community amenities were incorporated, including basketball court and public art. MCN Build carefully navigated every aspect, from parental engagement to permitting requirements, collaborating with the owner to deliver an award-winning, model example for the District. With meticulous planning and execution, this two-phase project was completed and delivered ahead of schedule.
