The Meridian Hill Park Rehabilitation project, submitted for consideration for the ABC Metro Excellence in Construction Award, stands as a testament to meticulous restoration and modernization efforts that revitalized this historic landmark. Phased rehabilitation restored the park's weather-worn features, emphasizing architectural integrity and original beauty. Highlights include the restoration of historic features, construction of a new accessible route through the lower plaza level, and installation of pleaching frames in the Linden Allee. Over 13,000 square feet of exposed aggregate paving was meticulously installed to match the historic finish, paying homage to John J. Earley's pioneering work. Historically significant as the site of President John Quincy Adams' home and one of the earliest examples of Modern-era embassy buildings in Washington, DC, the park occupies a central role in the city's cultural landscape. The restoration efforts, overseen by Consigli, aimed not only to preserve its architectural heritage but also to enhance accessibility and functionality for all visitors. Challenges were met with ingenuity and collaboration, navigating stringent security protocols and logistics while aligning with the National Park Service's preservation goals. Over 40% of the project was assigned to small businesses, fostering community growth and engagement. Today, the lower plaza is accessible to all, addressing safety concerns and enhancing visitor experience. Drainage issues have been resolved, standing water eliminated, and landscape beautification enhances the park's ambiance, preserving its historic integrity and cultural significance as a cherished public gathering space in the heart of the nation's capital. Public engagement and education were prioritized throughout the construction process, with tours hosted for organizations such as the DC Preservation League and the Association for Preservation Technology's DC Chapter.
