Story

Scaffold Resource's contribution to the restoration of the National Cathedral's iconic organ is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and innovative solutions. At the heart of our involvement lies the design and installation of a primary access scaffold platform in the Great Choir area. This platform, spanning an impressive 59 feet in length and 41 feet in width, is strategically positioned 45 feet above the Great Choir area. Supported by steel trusses spanning north to south, it provides essential access for restoration activities while ensuring structural stability by anchoring to the existing concrete ledge at the Triforium Level. Completing the primary scaffold platform is a parapet wall, serving the dual purpose of lateral debris containment and visual concealment. This feature not only enhances safety by containing debris but also contributes to the aesthetics of the workspace, maintaining a clean and organized environment conducive to restoration efforts. Integrated into the access platform is a cable hoist bay, facilitating the removal, restoration, and reinstallation of facade pipes by partnering entities Allen Built Incorporated and Foley Baker Incorporated. This streamlined rigging system ensures efficiency and precision in handling delicate organ components, essential for the successful restoration of this iconic instrument. To ensure optimal working conditions during restoration activities, temporary lighting fixtures are concealed within the scaffold structure's underside. Positioned strategically at all four corners, these fixtures provide essential illumination, ensuring adequate visibility and safety during work hours. Solutions are also employed to minimize disruption to the Cathedral's daily operations. A decorative fabric material has been installed on the West end parapet wall and the underside of the scaffolding platform. This innovative solution ensures full concealment of the scaffold platform while restoration work progresses seamlessly, allowing the Cathedral to continue its activities without interruption. Through these carefully planned and executed measures, Scaffold Resource demonstrates its commitment to excellence and innovation in access solutions. Our involvement in the restoration of the National Cathedral's organ not only preserves this iconic piece of architectural history but also ensures that it continues to inspire awe and reverence for generations to come.
