Kent County Animal Shelter

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Flooring

Story

The Kent County Animal Shelter replaces an existing, outdated animal shelter building. The new 23,000-square-foot shelter is nearly three times the size of the existing one, which dates to the 1950s. In addition to the County’s animal control role, the new facility optimizes the County’s veterinary capabilities and its pet adoption program.

Office and staff areas provide improved and efficient work spaces for ten County employees including a dispatcher, a director and eight animal control officers.

The center can accommodate 124 dogs and 114 cats. Several cage sizes are available for various types of feline and canine guests. Easy care features include durable floor coverings, power wash and rinse system and 286 floor drains. Glass block window design provides abundant natural light in animal housing areas.

An advanced energy recovery wheel is incorporated into the air handling system. Additionally, the wheel is coated to prevent microorganisms from accumulating. This wheel has a self purging portion that continuously vents bacteria out of the building.
