Story

Holland’s award winning Downtown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is home to more than 100 shops, galleries and restaurants located in buildings dating from the 1890’s. Downtown Holland has also been nationally recognized for its innovative approach to revitalization.

As part of the revitalization program, the downtown “Streetscape” included installation of cobblestone sidewalks and crosswalks, over 100 historic lights, and hundreds of trees. Benches and a special statuary add the finishing touches.

The “Snowmelt” project loops nearly 60 miles of piping beneath  the streets and sidewalks downtown carrying warm water from nearby municipal power plant to melt the snow.  Holland boasts the largest municipally run snowmelt system in the country.

The project included an outdoor Farmer’s Market with an underground snow-melt system, asphalt paving, brick pavers, landscaping, site concrete, masonry piers, structural steel canopies, fabric awnings, plumbing, water main, lighting and electrical installations.
