Story

Total Fire Protection designed and installed custom fire suppression systems to protect the new 415,000 sq ft facility for Lane Automotive.

The original systems were designed with (6) conventional sprinkler systems at the roof deck, supplemented with (2) in-rack sprinkler systems in the pallet racks. This design required the installation of a 1,500 gpm diesel-driven fire pump with the water supplied by the City of Watervliet.

Once the overhead systems and fire pump were installed, the owner requested that we change the system design to eliminate the in-rack sprinkler systems. To do this, we needed to remove the overhead systems, install (4) new ESFR systems that required a 2,000 gpm fire pump.

The City of Watervliet could not supply enough water to operate a 2,000 gpm fire pump. With the assistance of Wrightman & Associates, the ground water retainage ponds were reconfigured to store over 600,000 gallons of water. The fire pump house was built at the retainage ponds and a diesel driven vertical turbine fire pump was installed taking suction from the ponds to provide the necessary water supply.
