M-26 and US-41 Bridge Approach

Houghton, Michigan

General-Contractor

Story

Moyle Construction was awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the M-26 and US-41 south Portage Lift Bridge approach locally known as the Yooper Loop.  The work included widening the approach from two lanes to three and the highway from four lanes to five.  As part of the highway expansion, a soil nail wall system was used to hold up the steep rock face that lines the highway.  This was the first time this system was used by the Michigan Department of Transportation.  The work also included a 160 foot long pedestrian tunnel consisting of 12 ft x 9 ft sections of pre-cast concrete boxes under the highway south of the bridge.  Traffic was reduced to two lanes and the tunnel was installed one half at a time.  The tunnel provided ADA access for residents of he nighborhood south of the highway to the waterfront parks and marina.
