Children of Peace School

Chicago, Illinois

Story

Children of Peace is a Catholic elementary school in the heart of Chicago’s Illinois Medical District, that has been serving local families since the 1940s. Once connected to two sister schools, the Archdiocese of Chicago has consolidated them entirely into Children of Peace over the last decade. This places a tremendous strain on the existing facilities, which are in need of modernization and expansion.

Mekus Tanager was hired by the Archdiocese to develop a feasibility study for the renovation and expansion of the school. We helped them envision a new facade and entryway, as well as a multipurpose room and cafeteria that connect the two existing buildings. The new structures rely on sustainable building principles and the pedagogical advances since the school was built. Natural light is heavily utilized, resulting a space that is energy friendly and kid-friendly.
