Stone Haven Free Methodist Church

Story

The intent of this project was to enhance the appearance and curb appeal of this circa 1970 pre-engineered metal building housing a sanctuary, gymnasium, classrooms, and administrative areas. After determining the long-range goals of the Church, it was decided to implement the new work in two phases. The initial phase added a new lobby, a shell for an enlarged sanctuary or future administrative wing, and re-faced the façade of the building. A new stone wall was also constructed to create a visual barrier between the parking lot and the future sanctuary or administrative addition. A large window in the shell addition provides a serene view of a plush, landscape garden in front of the screen wall. After the completion of the initial phase, it became apparent the Church would require a new administrative area, including conference and counseling space. The decision was made to build-out the interior of the shell addition to accommodate those functions in-lieu of an expanded Sanctuary. With this in mind, the reception and entry area for the new administrative space was designed to complement the adjacent main lobby, constructed in the initial phase, by a similar use of color, materials, and detailing. Large areas of glass comprise the wall separating the administrative area from the main lobby to allow visual continuity of the spaces. Advantage was taken of the high shell ceiling, and by designing the office spaces with lower ceiling planes, natural light is allowed to penetrate deep into the administrative space from the higher windows above. Variations in massing and color of the program areas create a dynamic feeling in the compact space. The wall and landscape garden designed in the initial phase creates a natural backdrop for the Pastor and support staff offices along the existing glass wall. "From the very beginning of our project, I had confidence that JTAI would create a design for our church remodeling project that would be very functional and also attractive. In the end, it far exceeded the expectations that I had. The finished product created a very inviting atmosphere that has helped us see more guests coming through the doors of our church. JTAI was extremely helpful in carrying out the details of the design and helped us improve our image with the City of Troy and surrounding neighborhood. The best highlight was the help and support we experienced from JTAI thoughout the whole project." Larry Cranston (Pastor)
