Story

This project converted a building that once housed laboratories and offices for the Michigan Milk Producers Association into professional law offices. To control budget, existing stairs, window openings, and building entry locations were left intact and the program evolved around these elements. A common, central area houses all shared and public functions and is situated around the main entry location. Private offices ring the perimeter of the building to take advantage of the existing windows. Strategically placed stacked openings allow the partitions to convey privacy while providing a sense of openness. A refined glass and wood veneer grid separates the lobby from the office while providing visual continuity between the spaces. Contemporary detailing of traditional materials gives air to the stately law office, however the transparency allows a glance at the colorful forms beyond, suggesting an inviting and more relaxed environment. "I was absolutely amazed at your ability to transform an absolutely drab, square building into a truly unique office environment." Jules Olsman (Partner)
