Story

The newest Bloomingdale’s at Santa Monica Place features two floors of high-end merchandise and infrastructure for future retail or office space on the third floor.  The existing fortress-like box of a Macy’s store was thoroughly re-designed inside and out to create the new Bloomingdale’s. Invoking a SoHo New York feel with a SoCal flair, the store’s interior features an open-floor plan with exposed structural, mechanical and electrical systems. Pedestrian-scale was greatly enhanced at street level with vitrine displays and large windows that showcase the merchandise and introduce natural light to the sales areas.  Outside, thousands of floating stainless steel discs on the façade shimmer with the ocean breezes, and a new three-story glass curtain wall corner entry sits directly across from a proposed light-rail station.

Sustainability was also an integral part of the design:

·         Lighting meets or exceeds strict California Title 24 guidelines,

·         75% of demolition and construction waste materials were recycled,

·         Updated landscaping uses drip irrigation,

·         Low VOC paints,

·         A new white, reflective roof,

·         Recycled materials throughout,

·         Exposed stained concrete floors in a variety of patterns and colors

·         Storm water collection and pre-treatment.

With so much in-store, Bloomingdale’s at Santa Monica Place is both urbane…and sustainable.
