Mathison and Mathison / BHB Project

Thornapple River Residential Remodel

Story

Bruce Heys Builders (BHB) would like to nominate our partnership with Mathison I Mathison Architects (MMA) for the 2021 Best Architect Project.

Not only did our two companies build an excellent working relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic, but together we also created a beautiful home along the Thornapple River that delighted the homeowners.  This project began with an older home that, in its original state, did not maximize views of the river or even allow access to it.

MMA first identified the scope and values of the project using an extensive questionnaire to understand the homeowners' vision.  Based on responses to the questionnaire and subsequent conversations, the architect then developed multiple conceptual design schemes that were feasible, effective, and visually appealing. Through an extensive and iterative design process, MMA ensured that all the homeowners' wish list items were met.

The exterior of the home incorporates the volume and footprint of the required space, the specific topography of this unique site, as well as the expansive views and vistas over the river.  When MMA began, the homeowners' inspirational images fully aligned with the views expressed in their questionnaire.  This included lowering the pitch of the rooflines, adding special custom details, and reconceptualizing the mid-century home into an energy-efficient ranch - with modern and playful custom features.

This architectural design brings design, functionality and joy to the home through four primary areas of focus:

1. Creation of a new entry sequence, strategically positioning the front door to both offer security and to avoid giving away the river view until deeper into the house.

2. Addition of custom-lit niches for the Owner's artwork, focusing the guest's attention as they enter and move through the house.

3. Location of strategically placed windows and skylights to provide beautiful natural light in the house while maintaining privacy.  Thoughtful outdoor lighting at the front and rear illuminate the ground, cedar soffits, and important features of the home.

4. Updated rooflines and sloped gutters for improved water management, visual interest, and enhanced sensory experience.

Because this job occurred during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the  homeowners chose to completely entrust the project to BHB and MMA. Throughout the entire project, meetings were conducted virtually, where absolutely no walkthroughs took place. Complete sanitization took place between each vendor and tradespeople visits.  Despite these challenges, deadlines were met and the homeowners were completely thrilled with the end results.

Together, we were able to deliver a design that showcases the beautiful river views while being sensitive to existing trees and the limited buildable area on the lot. The thoughtful design process created a project that allows the family to best experience the home and site throughout the various times of day and various seasons of the year.

We are extremely proud of the partnership with MMA and are honored to submit the project for Best Architect Project of the Year.
