The Madison

Story

This was a full house renovation of a historic home in the Heritage Home area encompasing over 10,000 square feet and four levels. Every effort was made to keep, restore as re-use as many elements as possible. One example: every window was restored, including removing each pane of glass, weighing, marking, and labeling each window to ensure the weights stayed the same in order to reuse the original pulley system of opening and closing the windows. The interior doors were also stripped, restored and re-used, including the window and door hardware.

As much of the original millwork was kept (for example in the Living and Dining Rooms). Then all new millwork was custom milled to match where applicable, including 20+ pieces of individual moldings per doorway. New millwork was selected to work with the historical integrity of the home. Some areas were added to work with a more modern lifestyle, such as: the staircase was completely moved and rebuilt to open up the home for a more open layout. A new Laundry Room was added to the second level to be near the bedrooms. A new Kitchen was added to the Lower Level.

MAIN FLOOR:

Kitchen: This was moved to a new location in the open and now opens up to the Breakfast Room on one side and a Den on the other side. Original items such as windows, doors, an original garage door were reused, and original brick was exposed and kept in the space. A custom coffee bar and beverage bar were added to the space. New millwork and ceiling beams were added details. Professional grade appliances, mirror tile, and quartz countertops that also make up the splash and window ledge are custom details.

Dining Room: The original millwork, built-ins, and fireplace were restored. New lighting and wallpaper updates the space. The original butler's call button in the floor was kept as a reminder of the history of the home.

Living Room: Like the Dining Room, the original millwork and fireplace was restored. We repurposed exterior (restored) windows and incorporated them into this room to let in natural light from adjacent rooms.

Den: This room sits between the Kitchen and Living Room. New millwork and ceiling beams were added to this space.

Butler's Pantry: As many original cabinets were removed, stripped, and restored, and blended in seamlessly with new cabinetry for this space. A highlight is an antique German Silver sink from the 1800s was found (else where) and included in the space. Modern tile, lighting, and quartz counters update the space.

Foyer: The original vestibule tile was restored and kept. Damaged millwork was removed and filled in. New herringbone wood floors were installed in the foyer. The staircase looks historical, but it completely brand new and extends three floors up. New wall and stair paneling were designed and added.

Powder Room: This was a new addition and has a secret jib door built into the paneling that opens with the push of a hand. Custom millwork, new plumbing and lighting modernize this new space.

Sun Porch: 840 panes of glass, 42 individual sashes were pulled out, restored and replaced in this porch alone. We restored all of the radiators to working order in the house, restored the paneling, and brought the fireplace back to working order. New checkerboard marble floors were installed.

SECOND FLOOR:

We did a lot of re-working of spaces on the second floor due to relocating the staircase, converting a bedroom to a master bathroom, etc.

Master Bedroom: We restored the fireplace, filled in new millwork and added an adjacent Master Bathroom.

Master Bathroom: New custom tile steam shower with rainfall and body sprays, a custom hand laid tile floor to create the shown pattern, custom vanities flanking a new free-standing bathtub. A water closet and custom coffee bar with prep sink lead to the rest of the bathroom. Not shown is a walk-in closet re-using existing restored cabinetry that is off the bathroom.

Bedroom #2: This is showing one of the other guest bedrooms on this floor with a new ensuite bathroom.

Kid's Bathroom: A fun triple wall mount sink is the highlight of this bathroom, along with a new millwork, wall tile, new plumbing and lighting, and a custom floor tile. This is a tile floro with a custom hand laid pattern to create the geometric floral pattern.

Green Bathroom: This is the hallway bathroom that is a new space showcasing green herringbone tilework.

ATTIC LEVEL:

Walls were removed and ceiling planes reworked to create a Bonus Room, two Bedrooms, and two Bathrooms.

Attic Bedroom #1 and #2: Original windows were restored, brick walls exposed, and all new flooring, millwork, and nickel gap on many of the walls and ceilings. New oak beams enhance the ceiling planes. New built-ins were created for window seats under the historic arched windows.

Attic Bathroom #1: An unique layout due to a small footprint and sloped ceiling made for an interesting remodel. We removed the mural and installed a tiled bathtub area, historic millwork and vertical paneling create a more historical look

Attic Bathroom #2: Another new bathroom, this shows a checkboard floor, custom tile shower is off the new Bonus Room

Attic Bonus Room: This existing space was reconfigured, walls removed, and restored doors were incorporated. Previously covered up original windows were discovered and restored, and built-ins were created as window seats. Nickel gap paneling was added to the walls and ceilings, and new oak beams were added to enhance the multiple ceiling planes. A new Kitchenette was added in the same location as the old one, this one with custom dark green cabinetry, tile, and new plumbing and lighting.

LOWER LEVEL:

Formally all one open space, we re-worked it into a Family Room, Kitchen, Exercise Room (not shown) and Powder Room. We rebuilt the stairs and exposed an original brick wall. We removed the entire wood floor, all the way down to the dirt, re-worked everything and re-installed all of the original flooring piece-by-piece. We also added into old storm windows that we restored and used as interior windows. The old benches were built when the space was once a ballroom. We restored, re-worked and re-used these in the space.

A new Kitchen with black custom cabinets, black tile, and walnut countertops was a brand new addition to the space. An adjacent Powder Room is also a brand new bathroom, that also shows all black tile and black plumbing fixtures. A wine storage area (not shown) is around the corner, under the staircase.

Exterior: Due to the regulations of the Heritage Hill district, all restoration was done to match the existing as closely as possible. Removing and restoring millwork, windows, front door, porch balusters, etc. were done. For example, the brick pavers were all removed, kept, and re-installed.
