This classic and very gorgeous two story brick East Grand Rapids home was in need of a little updating for the young family living there.  When taking on a remodel, there is always more to the project than what meets the eye and often times you can end up having to make major project changes along the way. In this homes case,  after demolition it was discovered that a second story load bearing column was being supported by sub-floor only. The weight of that structure did not carry down to the basement footing.  The challenge was getting steel beams in place to carry the second story structure that transferred to the basement footings-while leaving the main floor with an open concept feel. That issue was resolved by adding steel beams that carried and supported the weight of the existing area as well as the newly added area appropriately. It was able to be fixed while maintaining an open concept feel that the homeowner wanted. The kitchen was fully demolished and redesigned. We added a walk through secondary kitchen off that back with a full sink and working counter. This was set purposefully in the back of the kitchen to hide away the day to day appliances and kitchen tools that don't need to be seen. This pantry opens up to both sides of the kitchen and even has a full light door that leads to the back yard.  Elegant and simple, the large lights compliment the large island and table area. The detailed changes to this home were beautifully executed and provided so much extra storage for the family that they didn't have before. Walk in closets were added upstairs to each room and gave their girls more room for clothing, shoes purses and more!  The back entry and laundry area were opened up to each other and given a much roomier feel. Wallpaper and new lighting were added to almost every room in the home, upstairs and down that make so much extra interest  when mixing all the tones and finishes. The feel of the home overall was elegant, warm and welcoming. It was a family home and still feels like that, but with improved working areas, more storage space and updated finishes.
