The IFF (Illinois Facilities Fund) represents the Homan Square Power House Association in this unique venture of converting the former Sears Roebuck and Co. power supply house into a charter school, with programming inspired by the Henry Ford Learning Institute. The Charles Shaw Technology & Learning Center provides its faculty and students with the unique opportunity to teach, learn about, and live with sustainable design. The charter school will represent sustainability through the materials used, the landmark building being preserved, and the cultural exhibit featuring the enduring spirit of the North Lawndale Community. Through an integrated design process, the consultant team is working to preserve the exterior facade, industrial-age machinery, and open space on site while providing accessible parking. Designed to LEED gold standards, the school hopes to welcome students by the fall of 2008.
