This project consisted of 1.1 miles of concrete freeway reconstruction, ramp reconstruction, freeway lighting, traffic signal upgrading, anti-icing and intelligent transportation system installations. As well as six structure replacements (the S-Curve), structure rehabilitation and intermittent retaining wall construction on US-131 from South of Wealthy Street Northerly to North of Pearl Street, in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI. Serving as a subcontractor to Kiewit Construction, Driesenga & Associates, Inc., supplied contractor quality control testing, in accordance with Michigan Department of Transportation criteria, throughout construction. Quality control services included on-site testing of concrete produced by local batch plants (slump, air content, temperature, molding compressive strength cylinders, and yield calculations). The testing of 68,000 cubic meters of plastic concrete was performed on an expedited schedule (6 days per week, 24 hours per day) in order to minimize traffic impact in the downtown Grand Rapids, MI. area. In addition, Driesenga & Associates, Inc. supplied contractor staking which included bridge footing and wall layouts, pier layout, slope staking, pavement layout, utility layout and as built topographic surveys.
