Story

Design Plus provided programming through construction administration services for the 39,750 SF renovation of the Sligh Furniture Factory into an art studio, classroom, and gallery facility. The renovated facility consolidated a wide variety of art exhibits, assembly, lecture, and studio spaces, along with an area for the campus Maintenance Department. A sculpture courtyard links the new entry to a pedestrian mall through the center of campus. Open fabricating areas of the existing factory allowed for large, flexible studio spaces. The quieter, cleaner studio areas are located in the middle of the building. Each student studio area is accompanied by a faculty office/studio for the private use of instructors, who are professional artists, allowing students close interaction with their teachers and an opportunity to see professional artists at work. The project was completed in October 1982 with a total construction cost of $923,500.
