VA Medical Center Palliative Care Unit :: Comprehensive Chilled Water Evaluation

Battle Creek, Michigan

Engineering

Story

Design Program:  This project began as a the chilled water plant distribution study of the controls and heat rejection systems for the 1200 ton chilled water system. The scope of services included evaluation of the performance of existing chillers, pumps, cooling towers, condenser water pumps, piping systems, air handler cooling connections, and evaluations of the efficiency of the system components to lower the kw/ton of the system. The corrective measures included installing a new chiller, converting the chilled water piping system to primary-secondary, installing frequency drives, improving control devices and changes in operational functions of the system.

Design Challenges:  The main challenge of this project was evaluating the systems and then  having to design and install the new equipment while the hospital remained operational.
