Portage, Michigan
Engineering
Design Program: Identical multi-purpose buildings were designed for separate High School sites. Each building is designed to allow three (3) basketball courts to be utilized concurrently or four (4) volleyball courts on an open gymnasium wood floor. Each building has an elevated running track level which is 13,363 square feet in size. The buildings also house six (6) instructional activity enclosed rooms, storage rooms, and locker rooms. The buildings are used for classroom instruction, practice area, and for competition play and viewing.
Design Challenges: Extensive excavation was needed to remove an overabundance of soils from the Portage Northern building site location. This extra soil was utilized to compensate for the deficiencies at the Portage Central building site. The school district mandated that the buildings be completed simultaneously as to lesson any idea of favoritism between the two high schools.
