Monsanto :: Bulk Storage Building Husk & Sort Building Addition Seed Dryer Building Relocation

Constantine, Michigan

Engineering

Story

Design Program:  In 2007 Monsanto increased the capacity of their Seed Corn Facility in Constantine, Michigan.  The project involved doubling the size of their bulk storage structure, adding a fifth seed dryer, expanding the husk and sort building and expanding the warehouse

Design Challenges: The primary structural design challenge was the construction of a new enclosure over the new and existing bulk storage bins.  The bulk storage bins, (design by others) consists of steel panels bolted together to form 8'x8' bins that extend 60 feet above grade.  Byce & Associates, Inc. task was to construct an enclosure above the bins to house bin loading conveyors and  equipment.  Columns were fabricated to bolt directly to the bins and extend up to support the new roof framing. The overall    structure has dimensions of 375 feet by 150 feet with a ridge height of 85 feet above grade.
