Byce & Associates, Inc. :: Renovation to a Historical Building

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Engineering

Story

Design Program:  Constructed on the edge of the Kalamazoo Edison Neighborhood, the Byce & Associates Building was a jewel in the rough, surrounded by industry and underdeveloped land.  In 2001 the re-design and renovation of the art deco styled building began, which allowed a better   traffic flow for the firms clients and its ever growing number of employees. Existing storage areas on the main level of the building were renovated into open office space for work stations, a library, restroom, and conference room with kitchenette.  Large windows were designed into the project to  allow the natural light to filter into the work spaces. The front entry was reconfigure providing a new reception area and additional offices. The upper level renovations included an employee break room and restrooms both with an art deco theme.  Once a historical building hidden amongst industry and asphalt, Byce &      Associates, Inc. is now a beautifully renovated structure that invites people into the newly revitalized South Town area of Kalamazoo.

Design Challenges: It was challenging to keep the exterior and interior of the building close to that of the original art deco period in which the structure was built. All of the renovations to the building were done during the course of normal business hours, which made it logistically hard at times.
