Chicago, Illinois
Architectural
Chicago’s State Street has traditionally symbolized the muscular spirit of the city. The northeast corner of State and Randolph was the site for Burnham and Root’s Masonic Temple (1890-92), and Burnham’s renowned Marshall Field’s (now Macy’s) department store still stands across the street. This multi-use urban building composed of retail, commercial, and residential space brings active life to the State Street renaissance.
Four stories of retail and commercial space - including the new headquarters for The Joffrey Ballet - provide a strong base for two, eight-story "legs" that lift 23 stories of condominiums up to capture lake views to the east. A sculptural curtain wall of aluminum and glass creates dynamic texture of light and shadow to continue the spirit of Chicago’s strength, clarity, and directness.
