Saint Mary's Health Care Parking Structure

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Story

The parking ramp at Saint Mary’s Health Care is a seven-level post-tensioned cast-in-place structure with 554 parking spaces and a total building area of 240,000 square feet. Built on the former site of a surface parking lot, the ramp provides much-needed parking spaces without disturbing any previously undeveloped land. The new ramp accommodates visitor and staff parking for the Hauenstein Center, and separate parking and entrance for the new emergency department. The structure includes two elevators, two fully enclosed staircases, and a bright and reliable lighting system that ties in to the hospital's emergency generator system. Brick and colored precast concrete veneers and an aluminum louver screen provide a distinct, attractive exterior. Streetscaping was also included to enhance the visitor experience and to maintain the campus environment of St. Mary’s. During construction, recycled materials were used and waste was recycled to minimize environmental impact. The ramp’s top tier features a heli-stop for Aero Med helicopters, providing quick access to the new Emergency Center. The heli-stop includes a foam fire suppression system and a snow melt system, enabling air ambulances to land safely year round. Construction began in November 2007, and was completed in October 2008. Great pride in design and quality workmanship is evident in all aspects of this project.
