Spectrum Health Butterworth Lobby

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Story

The newly renovated Spectrum Health Butterworth lobby is an eye-catching, grand entrance. The renovation required significant demolition and remodeling of the existing entryway to provide modern charm including a 15,000 square foot glass entrance canopy, high ceilings, an exterior glass wall, a warming fireplace, and a new check-in desk. The large artistic canopy allows valets to greet patients and visitors while staying protected from the elements. Elaborate hallways extend to the east and west of the main entrance. To the east, exterior glass walls provide natural lighting for decorative glass panels leading to the Bistro and the Meijer Heart Center. To the west, glass curtain walls bring in natural daylight, emphasizing the iconic panels and the second floor balcony. This corridor leads to the newly constructed Conference and History Rooms, and to the new Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, scheduled to open in 2011. The project sits at the intersection of Coit and Michigan Streets at the peak of Michigan Street Hill and is sandwiched between the Meijer Heart Center, Spectrum Health Butterworth, and the new Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. The confined site required well-coordinated, just-in-time deliveries with limited material laydown areas.
