The Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion at Spectrum Health’s Butterworth Campus is home to the Cancer and Hematology Center of West Michigan, the region’s most comprehensive outpatient cancer center. The seven-story, two hundred eighty thousand-square foot building consolidates Spectrum Health’s outpatient cancer services and its staff of over three hundred fifty medical professionals and cancer specialists. Among Lemmon-Holton houses: a Betty Ford Clinic; four C-T simulators; a M-R-I machine; multiple mammography units; a radiation treatment area; several research labs; and administrative and physicians’ offices. This project required surmounting a number of unique challenges, including the construction of a pedestrian tunnel that is over one hundred feet long and twenty feet in diameter. This tunnel was built forty-five feet beneath Michigan Street and connects the Cancer Pavilion to the campus’ other buildings. The geological crew used the New Austrian Tunnel Method, a sophisticated form of sequential excavation and support. This was the first time this system was used on a project of this scale
