Steelcase Learning Center

Grand Rapids, MI

Story

The Steelcase Company continues to revitalize existing facilities. The Steelcase Learning Center building which once facilitated manufacturing processes required further façade work to better reflect the now changed use space of the environment inside. The existing East and West elevations clad in weathered steel panels measure nearly eight hundred feet; these panels needed to be removed and replaced. Architectural Metals Incorporated, under the direction of Vos Glass, provided and installed fourteen thousand square feet of 1/4” thick vertical insulated wall panels in mica, metallic finish. Panels and flashing were installed in a three week time period. In addition, fourteen thousand square feet of 1/8” thick aluminum plate wall panels with clear anodized finish were installed at the East, West and portions of the South elevation. Much of the custom aluminum panel was installed in an overhead soffit construction. An additional ‘eyebrow’ feature was added to the West elevation into the ‘new’ aluminum and glass curtainwall also installed by Vos Glass. All the large ‘oversized’ aluminum plate wall panels had to be field measured allowing for zero tolerance when fabricated by ‘Accuform’ in Grand Rapids. The custom joint spacing to match curtainwall window mullions in areas with fabrication and installation required Vos Glass to be quick and precise to meet the fast paced schedule.
