Central Reformed Church - 2007 Addition

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Story

Central Reformed Church is a 91 year old congregation that has been located in their current location for 52 years. The church had two goals for this project. The first was to create a new multi-use entry that gives barrier free access to the sanctuary and chapel and to create a space that is used as a gathering place before & after Sunday services, weddings or one of the many musical concerts the church hosts. Their second goal was to bring the existing building up to current safety codes. This project consisted of a 7,000 sq. ft. two level addition that has exposed steel trusses with translucent roof panels that allow natural light to enter the sanctuary, a new elevator and curved stairway to access the lower level and space for future restrooms and meeting space. This project also included renovation work to the existing building, This work consisted of installing a new fire alarm system, new exit signs and emergency lighting, lighting upgrades in many areas, upgrading the existing restrooms to barrier-free, new floor coverings in the sanctuary and chapel, new air handling equipment to supply air conditioning to the sanctuary and chapel and a humidification system for the sanctuary to help preserve the buildings 52 year old organ.
