Spectrum Health: Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Story

Design: URS Corp Contract: Competitively Bid Budget: $1,200,000 Supervision: Doug Sparling, Project Manager This challenging project, located on Michigan Hill, was erected by Pioneer Construction for the Christman Company. Because there was little room for staging, detailed work sequencing plans were developed before materials were delivered to the project. With careful planning and logistics coordination, 2,200 tons of steel were brought to the site and raised into place. The Pioneer crews utilized a 110 ton crawler crane and the site tower crane to offload and erect each of the thousands of individual pieces. The geometry presented challenges as well. The convex radius elevation on Michigan Street was extremely detailed and included cantilevers, rolled pourstops, and curtianwall supports. Another notable feature includes the 630 tons of 1” plate steel that was placed with magnetic rigging to cover the linear accelerator. All the steel for the Lemmen-Holton Pavilion was erected in four months.
