Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Story

Recent additions and renovations to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church are highlighted by a new bell tower dome that Buist Sheet Metal clad with both Freedom Gray copper and cold rolled copper. The majority of the dome was built on the ground. The walls were clad in flat seam copper, including wrapping eight curved window openings and arches. Curved Freedom Gray valley pieces were fit and soldered, draining to small pockets at the base of the arches. A 16 ounce Freedom Gray double locked standing seam roof was installed on top of the dome. In order to turn a seam at the hips, each panel was cut, fit, and soldered to the proper curve. Batten seam hip caps were installed, followed by a soldered pipe flashing at the base of the cross. The dome was set in place with a crane. Below the dome, Buist worked from scaffolding to install copper fascia on four large arches and to install four more Freedom Gray standing seam roofs that curve up from the corners of the brick walls. These roofs were flashed with a three-tiered fascia that finished at the base of the dome previously set in place. Buist also installed a standing seam copper portico roof and prefinished standing seam fascia for the new entry and screen wall. This project required careful planning and excellent craftsmanship to knit together the various pieces of this puzzle.
