Kent County Recycle Center

Story

Schedule, durability and cost were the main factors in the design and construction of Kent County’s new Recycling and Education Center. As Kent County’s website explains, “the single-stream recycling facility features state-of-the-art technology that allows residents to mix their recycling together at the curb because the new sorting process includes a combination of conveyors, shakers, blowers and magnets and requires less hand sorting.” In order to withstand that heavy equipment and noisy process, the county needed a durable and long-lasting product. The heavy equipment also required very tall walls that were able to withstand a considerable wind load. These factors combined with the quick installation process proved precast concrete the perfect material for the job. The project consists of 35,152 square feet of insulated precast wall panels along with 536 square feet of 8” Hollowcore floor plank for a mezzanine. “Kerkstra’s wall panels were a key part of the success of the Kent County Recycling Center. They provided a long lasting, durable and cost effective solution for the needs of this project. The entire shell was assembled in a matter of weeks, which allowed us to get enclosed faster and complete the project ahead of schedule,” Pete Michell – Rockford Construction Co.
